Chitose airport to a 'campsite'

After a fair bit of stuffing around with bikes, boxes, and packing materials, we headed out of the airport around midday.  We rode initially through semi rural areas bordering the airport, enjoying the greenery and keeping our eyes open for edible plants. The bikes were top heavy with the tent and the msr zing shelter, and unfortunately Bron's rear bag took a spill off her bike on a corner.  The zing was damaged a bit, but it wasn't too bad and we lashed things down tighter after that.  Within an hour we were all smiles cruising through town next to a river, saying hi to the locals and stopping often to check the map or make last minute adjustments to the bikes and chariot. With the exception of one missing screw for a gear shifter (it works despite it) the bikes are going well.
We did about 50 k's until we were by best reckoning within a few k's of the campsite marked on the map.  Unfortunately by this point it was late, getting dark rapidly and we couldn't find the campsite amongst the farmland.  We were lucky enough to find a good restaurant that was still open, and after eating the kids (and our legs) had had enough so we searched some more then set up camp on a seemingly deserted stretch of dirt road in the middle of a paddock.  We pitched the tent with the minimal 4 pegs, and put bikes on either side so we would be seen if a car came up the road at night.
