After a disturbed sleep due to mozzie bites sustained while setting up camp, we tried our luck at fishing again and then packed up and headed through a series of five tunnels before starting our descent towards the plains. We ended up in Hokkaido's billiard table: it was completely flat with long roads that were dead straight for 10 kilometres at a stretch. It was pleasant riding, with the mountains at our back and dairy farms on either side. We made extremely good time, slipstreaming behind one another and averaging over twenty ks an hour despite a headwind. We got our first puncture when the chariot ran over a staple, but it was a cinch to fix and we were soon rolling again.
We arrived in Obihiro and decided to check into a cheap hotel near the central railway station on account of there being no campsites anywhere near the city. We had tried to get into a riders lodge, but for reasons unknown we were refused admission...
We had no issues with the hotel however, it was very comfortable after spending so long in a tent!
